Supported by Arts Council England, Director Charlie Mortimer is exploring best practice in working with new writing.
Helen East’s piece looks at the unlikely relationship between an asylum seeker and her council estate neighbour, mediated by her visiting social worker. It deals with difficult issues and is in it’s first reading draft to be engaged in development workshops. Sharing their discoveries of the process, taking questions and demonstrating to audiences, they aim to offer sound advice to creatives in the North West who wish to engage and develop new writing. The event shall involve short development demonstrations from local writers.

An historic love triangle, Donizetti’s opera Roberto Devereux depicts the battle between Queen Elizabeth I, Robert Devereux - Earl of Essex and Sara the Duchess of Nottingham.
While Sara’s husband is plotting the death of Roberto, there is a great web of struggle between the main characters, ending with a tremendous mad scene for Elizabeth before Roberto’s offstage execution.
Considered some of Donizetti’s best vocal writing, this opera is thrilling in both music and drama.
This will be a semi-staged performance sung in Italian with English subtitles.

Following the hit sell-out production of THE RAGGED TROUSERED PHILANTHROPISTS,
Towns End Productions presents WE WILL BE FREE!, a new drama set in 1834 about the Tolpuddle Martyrs that follows the extraordinary true story of George and Betsy Loveless. He was a Methodist preacher and the leader of the six Dorsetshire farm labourers who were tried, convicted and condemned to harsh transportation by an oppressive Government for having the temerity to swear a secret oath and form a union to fight against a succession of wage cuts inflicted by the local landowner.
This vitally important story is told using the entertaining theatrical style developed through our production of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists; through Andy Vine’s powerful political cartoons and animation; through puppetry and the exquisite musical arrangements by revered folk singer and squeezebox player John Kirkpatrick, of the songs and rallying hymns of the Dorset labouring classes that resound down the years.

TO CELEBRATE BOB DYLANS’ BIRTHDAY - HERE IS .......
THE MILLERS TALE WITH THE SONGS OF BOB DYLAN
Its Chaucer, Dylan, and quite a few hats.
The Miller’s Tale from the Canterbury Tales, told as never before! A
musical comedy of
Chaucer’s ‘14th Century Carry-on’, told by England’s oldest song and
dance man, the Miller.
Yes, the very Miller that rode out of London on the pilgrimage to Canterbury…
These days he recites his poem, dances around his broomstick, sings
the songs of Bob Dylan and wears an interesting collection of hats.
It’s definitely six centuries of separation. While keeping close to
the original poetry, the Miller is almost fluent in modern English and
understandably bonkers!

Freerange Theatre Company returns to The Lantern with ‘Spoonface Steinberg’ by Lee Hall, the writer
of ‘Billy Elliot’.
‘Spoonface’ is an eight year old, opera-loving, autistic girl suffering from terminal cancer – but the play
is far from ‘doom and gloom’. In this stunning piece of theatre she shares her uplifting views on life and
death, religion, her inadequate parents and Mrs Spud, the cleaner. Never self-pitying or sentimental,
Spoonface Steinberg is a poignant, exhilarating and ever-hopeful monologue in which we learn to
appreciate the beauty in the world, in humanity and in adversity.
This is a masterpiece not be missed.
